{"id":42101,"date":"2024-04-07T06:54:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-07T06:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=42101"},"modified":"2024-04-07T06:54:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-07T06:54:41","slug":"us-china-relations-on-more-stable-footing-yellen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2024\/04\/07\/us-china-relations-on-more-stable-footing-yellen\/","title":{"rendered":"US -China relations on more stable footing- Yellen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;U.S. Treasury Secretary&nbsp;<strong>Janet Yellen<\/strong>met Sunday with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing and sent a message of mutual cooperation despite the nations\u2019 differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yellen came to China top of mind with&nbsp;<strong>trade practices<\/strong>that put American companies and workers at an unfair competitive disadvantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the ornate Fujian room of Great Hall of People building just west of Tiananmen Square, she told Li: \u201cWhile we have more to do, I believe that, over the past year, we have put our bilateral relationship on more stable footing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis has not meant ignoring our differences or avoiding tough conversations,\u201d&nbsp;she said.&nbsp;\u201cIt has meant understanding that we can only make progress if we directly and openly communicate with one another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Li said media interest in Yellen\u2019s visit&nbsp;\u201cshows the high expectation they have &#8230; and also the expectation and hope to grow\u201d&nbsp;the U.S.-China relationship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting comes after the U.S. and China on Saturday agreed to hold \u201c&nbsp;<strong>intensive exchanges<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201d on more balanced economic growth, according to a U.S. statement issued after Yellen and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng held extended meetings over two days in the southern city of Guangzhou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also agreed to start exchanges on combating money laundering. It was not immediately clear when and where the talks would take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the world\u2019s two largest economies, we have a duty to our own countries and to the world to responsibly manage our complex relationship and to cooperate and show leadership on addressing pressing global challenges,\u201dYellen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yellen also met Sunday with Beijing Mayor Yin Yong and told him that \u201clocal governments play a critical (economic) role, from boosting consumption to addressing overinvestment,\u201d adding that Beijing is particularly important in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe that to understand China\u2019s economy and its economic future, engagement with local government is essential,\u201d Yellen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later Sunday, Yellen will meet with students and faculty at Peking University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;U.S. Treasury Secretary&nbsp;Janet Yellenmet Sunday with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing and sent a message of mutual cooperation despite the nations\u2019 differences.
