Looking for a job may be one of society\u2019s most dreaded tasks. However, when you finally find what feels like a good fit, it can hurt even more when things don\u2019t work out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if things go south for a reason that doesn\u2019t make sense, it can be downright confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One woman experienced all of these emotions when she was told she wasn\u2019t chosen for a job because of the way she presented herself physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman claimed she didn\u2019t receive a job offer because she didn\u2019t wear makeup to the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TikTok user\u00a0Melissa Weaver\u00a0posted a video that went viral in which she said she was rejected after a job interview because she didn\u2019t wear any makeup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI interviewed for a job earlier this week,\u201d she explained to her viewers. \u201cThe interview went so well. Every question she had, I had a great answer for. I used to work in recruitment. I know how to interview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weaver\u00a0felt like she was a perfect fit for the job, so she didn\u2019t understand what had gone wrong when she received an email telling her that she would not be advancing in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI get an email from the recruiter saying that I\u2019m not going to be moving on to the next round,\u201d Weaver said. \u201cI was really bummed because I wanted the job, but I was also very confused.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weaver was so confused about why she was not chosen for the job that she decided to email the recruiter and ask for some feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe said that while my background was exactly what they were looking for, my experience lined up with what they need for the position, and my own personal goals and values aligned with the company\u2019s, she was concerned that for my interview, I hadn\u2019t put enough effort in my appearance given the level of role I was interviewing for,\u201d she explained, stating that she had interviewed for a vice president position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weaver said that she felt there was nothing wrong with her appearance. She had dressed nicely and appropriately. The only thing she could think of was that she didn\u2019t wear any makeup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don\u2019t really wear a lot of makeup. Not to be quirky, I just don\u2019t,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the world we live in, where appearance is everything, it\u2019s not surprising that women are judged for not wearing makeup in professional situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact,\u00a0a\u00a02016 study found\u00a0that attractive individuals outearned their peers by about 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gap narrowed when researchers factored in grooming, which for women included wearing makeup and other \u201cbeauty practices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s hardly shocking to learn that whether or not women wear makeup affects others\u2019 professional opinions of them. Society is certainly preoccupied with visual aesthetics, especially for women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fellow TikTok users noted how unfair this was, especially in a workforce that already discriminates against women far more than men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis would never be said to a man,\u201d one person argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPretty Privilege and \u2018corporate image\u2019 is a real thing,\u201d another user pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI feel like that\u2019s gender-based discrimination, and you could sue,\u201d a third commenter wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Weaver\u2019s part, she stated in a follow-up video that she has no intention of suing or doing anything else that could jeopardize her job search. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
