{"id":42583,"date":"2024-05-05T08:23:05","date_gmt":"2024-05-05T08:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=42583"},"modified":"2024-05-05T08:23:06","modified_gmt":"2024-05-05T08:23:06","slug":"canelo-alvarez-tames-jaime-munguia-to-keep-undisputed-crown-at-168lbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2024\/05\/05\/canelo-alvarez-tames-jaime-munguia-to-keep-undisputed-crown-at-168lbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Canelo \u00c1lvarez tames Jaime Mungu\u00eda to keep undisputed crown at 168lbs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canelo \u00c1lvarez held off a feisty challenger Saturday night, proving to be the stronger and more effective boxer to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship, winning by unanimous decision to hand Jaime Mungu\u00eda his first loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tim Cheatham scored the fight 117-110, David Sutherland had it 116-111 and Steve Weisfeld 115-112.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/live\/2024\/may\/04\/canelo-alvarez-v-jaime-munguia-undisputed-super-middleweight-championship-live\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c1lvarez (61-2-2) overcame a somewhat slow start to dominate Mungu\u00eda (43-1) before a crowd of 17,492. The champ took full control after knocking down Mungu\u00eda in the fourth round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lead-up to the bout was unusually polite, with both fighters saying they were proud to represent Mexico on Cinco de Mayo weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c1lvarez saved his harshest criticism during week not for his opponent, but for Mungu\u00eda\u2019s promoter. Oscar De La Hoya\u00a0used to be in \u00c1lvarez\u2019s corner, but they clearly are on opposite sides now and nearly even came to blows Wednesday at the news conference after trading allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mungu\u00eda the most aggressive boxer the first three rounds, even getting \u00c1lvarez into the ropes in the third. \u00c1lvarez, though, showed in the fourth he wasn\u2019t going anywhere, using a left and then a right to the face to send Mungu\u00eda to the canvass with 38 seconds left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c1lvarez then proceeded to sting Mungu\u00eda over the next four rounds with shots to the face. But \u00c1lvarez responded with his own combinations, including coming out of the corner, in the fight\u2019s most action-packed round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10th and 11th rounds were close, but largely the same trends followed of \u00c1lvarez delivering the harder shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"8297d848-f544-475d-987d-4d6f40319397\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/article\/2024\/may\/03\/oscar-de-la-hoya-saul-alvarez-canelo-boxing-interview\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/68a0017ad73af5081a3397076555e6a319588f77\/436_889_6015_3608\/master\/6015.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=cf175e6e88a44f85b5dd8e0fc3714b0f\" alt=\"Oscar De La Hoya\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mungu\u00eda came out in the final round fighting as if he knew he was trailing on the judges\u2019 card, but did little damage. It was \u00c1lvarez who again came through with the best blows, using a combination with about a minute left to Mungu\u00eda\u2019s head and following with several more shots to end the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the other main-card fights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b\u200b San Antonio\u2019s Mario Barrios (29-2) successfully defended his WBC interim world welterweight title by defeating Argentinian Fabian Maidana (22-3) by unanimous decision in the co-main event. Each judge scored the bout 116-111.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barrios prevailed despite fighting with his right eye nearly completely closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaidana fought hard for 12 rounds like I expected,\u201d Barrios said. \u201cOnce my eye started swelling up, it was hard to find my range. But we stuck to the fundamentals, tried to find openings and came out with the victory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b\u200b WBC interim world featherweight champion Brandon Figueroa (25-1-1, 19 KOs) of Welasco, Texas, knocked out Jessie Magdaleno (29-3) of Las Vegas with a left uppercut to his kidney with one second left in the ninth round ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b\u200b Lithuania\u2019s Eimantas Stanionis (15-0) easily retained his WBA welterweight title by claiming a unanimous decision over Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre (6-1-1) with scores of 117-111, 118-10 and 119-109.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canelo \u00c1lvarez held off a feisty challenger Saturday night, proving to be the stronger and more effective boxer to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship, winning by unanimous decision to hand Jaime Mungu\u00eda his first loss.
