The seventh of nine entries was: \u201cTrump is old and quite weird?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a fundraising event in Massachusetts on Saturday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/kamala-harris\">Harris<\/a>&nbsp;tried out the line again, describing what Trump and running mate JD Vance had been saying about her as \u201cjust plain weird\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI mean that\u2019s the box you put that in,\u201d Harris said after Trump had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jul\/27\/trump-campaign-insults-extremism-kamala-harris\">called<\/a>&nbsp;her \u201ca bum\u201d the previous day and Vance&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/article\/2024\/jul\/25\/jennifer-aniston-criticises-jd-vance-childless-cat-ladies-comment-about-kamala-harris-trump\">disparaged<\/a>&nbsp;her in 2021 as a \u201cchildless cat (lady)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Harris campaign, working to redefine the race with particular attention to the youth vote, including colorizing online HarrisHQ banners lime green after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/article\/2024\/jul\/26\/charli-xcx-from-slow-burn-popstar-to-brat-us-election-influencer\">Charli xcx<\/a>\u2019s \u201cbrat\u201d endorsement, has sought to draw attention to Trump\u2019s rally storytelling. Particularly, they have highlighted his frequent but references to fictional serial killer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/article\/2024\/jul\/25\/donald-trump-hannibal-lecter\">Hannibal Lecter<\/a>&nbsp;of Silence of the Lambs fame as well as the choice between being shocked by a sinking electric boat or being eaten by a shark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \u201cweird\u201d is what seems to be sticking, in part as an apparent simplification of warnings about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jul\/27\/trump-speech-no-need-to-vote-future\">threat to democracy<\/a>&nbsp;that Trump poses \u2013 which dominated 15 months of Biden\u2019s re-election campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minnesota\u2019s Democratic governor Tim Walz appears to have started the \u201cweird\u201d political trendline.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Tim_Walz\/status\/1816526334388310426\">He posted on X,&nbsp;<\/a>\u201cSay it with me: Weird,\u201d in response to a video of Trump speaking about Lecter. Walz later followed up with \u201cthese guys are weird\u201d to describe Trump and Vance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a Sunday appearance on CNN\u2019s State of the Union, Walz was asked if \u201cweird\u201d had replaced existential threat to democracy as a more effective attack strategy. EPA\/CHRIS KLEPONIS \/ POOL\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walz added that a second Trump presidency could indeed put women\u2019s lives at risk over reproductive rights after three of his US supreme court appointees helped eliminate federal abortion rights in 2022. He also said Trump could end other constitutional liberties \u2013 but musing about his embodiment of a threat to democracy \u201cgives him way too much power,\u201d Walz argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cListen to the guy. He\u2019s talking about Hannibal Lecter and shocking sharks and whatever crazy thing pops into his mind,\u201d Walz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we give him way too much credit. If you just ratchet down some of the scariness and just name it what it is. Have you seen the guy laugh? It seems very weird to me that an adult can go through six-and-a-half years of being in the public eye and when he laughs it\u2019s at someone \u2013 not with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s very weird behavior,\u201d Walz explained on State of the Union. \u201cI don\u2019t think you call it anything else. It\u2019s simply what we\u2019re observing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US transport secretary Pete Buttigieg, also an outside contender for Harris\u2019 vice president pick, tried a slightly amended line, telling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/buttigiegwins\/status\/1817554883584971141\">Fox News<\/a>&nbsp;that Trump is \u201cclearly older and stranger than when America first got to know him\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 78-year-old Trump\u2019s campaign, he added, has maintained its candidate \u201cis strong as an ox, leaps tall buildings in \u2026 bounds, but we don\u2019t have that kind of warped reality on our side\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure voters are worried about the age and acuity of president Trump compared to Kamala Harris<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/kamala-harris\/\">,<\/a>&nbsp;who represents being a generation younger,\u201d Buttigieg said. \u201cAnd how could anybody not watch the stuff he\u2019s saying, the rambling on the trail, and not be just a little bit concerned?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Democratic line on Trump comes after several days of criticism aimed at Vance not only about the \u201cchildless cat\u201d lady comment \u2013 but also because of reportedly resurfaced comments calling Trump \u201cmorally reprehensible\u201d and expressing his hatred for police officers, who generally enjoy the support of Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer described Vance\u2019s selection as an \u201cincredibly bad choice\u201d to CBS\u2019s Face the Nation on Sunday, adding that the Ohio Republican senator \u201cseems to be more erratic and more extreme than President Trump\u201d.<strong><br><br><\/strong>\u201cI\u2019ll bet President Trump is sitting there scratching his head and wondering, why did I pick this guy? The choice may be one of the best things he ever did for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/democrats\">Democrats<\/a>,\u201d Schumer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discursions come as a new ABC News\/Ipsos poll on Sunday found that Harris\u2019 favorability rating had jumped to 43% from 35% a week earlier. It found a major jump in her favorability rating among electorally crucial independent voters, with 44% saying they viewed her favorably compared to 28% the previous week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also significant is the 59-year-old Harris\u2019s numbers within the swing group of \u201cdouble haters\u201d \u2013 voters who liked neither\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/joebiden\">Biden<\/a>\u00a0nor Trump.
