{"id":43844,"date":"2024-09-11T06:42:37","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T06:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=43844"},"modified":"2024-09-11T06:42:39","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T06:42:39","slug":"ban-galamsey-until-sustainable-solutions-are-found-christian-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2024\/09\/11\/ban-galamsey-until-sustainable-solutions-are-found-christian-council\/","title":{"rendered":"Ban galamsey until sustainable solutions are found \u2013 Christian Council"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Christian Council of Ghana has added its voice to the increasing calls for a decisive and total ban on illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as \u201cgalamsey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This call from the religious body comes at a time when the detrimental effects of illegal mining on the environment, local communities, and the nation\u2019s future have reached critical levels, prompting various stakeholders to demand immediate and far-reaching actions to be taken against the practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Secretary of the Christian Council, Reverend Cyril Fayose, said there is an existential threat posed by galamsey to Ghana\u2019s natural resources, especially its water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reverend Fayose highlighted the urgency of the crisis, describing the menace as something that must be addressed without delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for more than just the usual condemnations and reactive measures, emphasising that only a well-thought-out and comprehensive strategy would suffice to protect Ghana\u2019s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think there should be a total ban, at least if not a total ban, a moratorium for some time [on galamsey] so that we sit back and think about how to proceed. There are two ways to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne is a total ban on small-scale mining so that no one is allowed to do small-scale mining, just as we don\u2019t allow anyone to mine in water bodies.
