{"id":45257,"date":"2025-02-14T00:16:27","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T00:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=45257"},"modified":"2025-02-14T00:16:30","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T00:16:30","slug":"dumsor-looms-as-karpower-threatens-shutdown-over-370m-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2025\/02\/14\/dumsor-looms-as-karpower-threatens-shutdown-over-370m-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Dumsor  looms as Karpower threatens shutdown over $370m debt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country\u2019s power sector is on the brink of a crisis as Karpowership \u2013 the operator of the Aboadze power barge has warned it will suspend electricity supply unless the government settles an outstanding debt of $379 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threat was issued during a meeting on February 10, 2025, between Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor and Karpowership officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The debt, owed by the state-run Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), adds to the country\u2019s ballooning energy sector liabilities, which have now surpassed $3 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eco-friendly travel packages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Minister, acknowledging the urgency of the situation, appealed to Karpowership to hold off on any drastic measures while the new administration explores payment solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) repeatedly flagging Ghana\u2019s energy debt as a critical risk, the window for intervention is narrowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eco-friendly travel packages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IMF has urged sweeping reforms to prevent the sector from collapsing under mounting financial strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Karpowership follows through with its threat, Ghana could face prolonged power outages, disrupting industries, businesses and households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/citinewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-02-13-at-17.01.08.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1143145\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The country\u2019s power sector is on the brink of a crisis as Karpowership \u2013 the operator of the Aboadze power barge has warned it will suspend electricity supply unless the government settles an outstanding debt of $379 million.
