{"id":45260,"date":"2025-02-14T07:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T07:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=45260"},"modified":"2025-02-14T07:00:10","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T07:00:10","slug":"ghs-begins-cholera-vaccination-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2025\/02\/14\/ghs-begins-cholera-vaccination-today\/","title":{"rendered":"GHS begins cholera vaccination today"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the alarming surge in cholera cases across multiple regions, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) have launched a vaccination exercise in Accra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative, which kicks off today [Friday, February 14], aims to immunise over 300,000 residents in the capital to curb the spread of the deadly disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This vaccination campaign comes at a critical time, as Ghana battles a rising cholera outbreak that has already resulted in over 4,000 reported cases across five regions including the Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Ashanti, and Western regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tragically, the outbreak has claimed more than 40 lives, sparking concern among health officials and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection, spreads primarily through contaminated food and water, leading to severe diarrhea, dehydration, and, in extreme cases, death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outbreak is attributed to poor sanitation, inadequate access to clean water, and unhygienic food handling practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health officials warn that the situation could worsen if urgent steps are not taken to prevent further transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the national response plan, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service are rolling out oral cholera vaccines (OCV) in targeted communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vaccine provides short-term protection against the disease and is especially crucial in areas with limited access to potable water and proper sanitation facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In response to the alarming surge in cholera cases across multiple regions, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) have launched a vaccination exercise in Accra.
