{"id":45436,"date":"2025-03-01T08:55:34","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T08:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=45436"},"modified":"2025-03-01T08:55:36","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T08:55:36","slug":"european-leaders-rally-behind-zelenskyy-after-stunning-trump-clash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2025\/03\/01\/european-leaders-rally-behind-zelenskyy-after-stunning-trump-clash\/","title":{"rendered":"European leaders rally behind Zelenskyy after stunning Trump clash\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Circling back to European leaders throwing their support behind&nbsp;<strong>Volodymyr Zelenskyy&nbsp;<\/strong>after his clash with&nbsp;<strong>Donald Trump,&nbsp;<\/strong>here are some of the political reactions from across the region, care of Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>European Union chiefs\u00a0<strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Antonio Costa<\/strong>\u00a0assured\u00a0<strong>Zelenskyy<\/strong>\u00a0that he was \u201cnever alone\u201d. \u201cBe strong, be brave, be fearless,\u201d wrote the European commission and council presidents in a joint statement on social media, telling Zelensky: \u201cWe will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>\u00a0said Russia was the \u201caggressor\u201d in the war and \u201cwe were all right to help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0and sanction Russia three years ago and to continue to do so\u201d. The French president went further to say that \u201cif anyone is playing at world war three, it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>\u201d, referring to Trump\u2019s accusations against Zelenskyy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Germany\u2019s likely next chancellor,\u00a0<strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>, assured his support to Zelenskyy, saying: \u201cWe must never confuse the aggressor and the victim in this terrible war.\u201d Outgoing chancellor\u00a0<strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong>\u00a0also voiced support for Ukraine, as did foreign minister\u00a0<strong>Annalena Baerbock<\/strong>, who added that Kyiv\u2019s \u201cquest for peace and security is ours\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"a95af180-2465-4c91-b470-484704f1b88a\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/06a14845450f283da0c26cf2a3e600736da95697\/0_78_5472_3283\/master\/5472.jpg?width=465&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none&amp;crop=none\" alt=\"Germany\u2019s Annalena Baerbock\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Germany\u2019s Annalena Baerbock.&nbsp;Photograph: dts News Agency Germany\/REX\/Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Italian prime minister\u00a0<strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>\u00a0called for the US,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\">Europe<\/a>\u00a0and their allies to gather over the Ukraine war. \u201cA summit without delay is needed&#8230; to talk frankly about how we intend to tackle today\u2019s major challenges, starting with Ukraine.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDutch support for Ukraine remains undiminished. Especially now,\u201d prime minister\u00a0<strong>Dick Schoof<\/strong>\u00a0said on X, adding that \u201cwe want lasting peace and an end to the war of aggression that Russia has started\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poland also reassured Kyiv. \u201cDear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone,\u201d prime minister\u00a0<strong>Donald Tusk<\/strong>\u00a0said on X in a post addressed to Zelenskyy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spanish prime minister\u00a0<strong>Pedro Sanchez<\/strong>\u00a0said his country would stand by Kyiv. \u201cUkraine, Spain stands with you,\u201d he said on X.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keir Starmer<\/strong>\u00a0vowed \u201cunwavering support\u201d for Kyiv.
