{"id":45750,"date":"2025-07-30T22:36:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T22:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=45750"},"modified":"2025-07-30T22:36:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T22:36:41","slug":"canada-and-other-14-nations-to-recognise-palestine-as-independent-state-at-un-general-assembly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2025\/07\/30\/canada-and-other-14-nations-to-recognise-palestine-as-independent-state-at-un-general-assembly\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada and other 14 Nations to recognise Palestine as independent state at UN general assembly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France and 14 other countries have co-signed a declaration that suggests a wave of future recognitions of an independent Palestinian state, as Canadian prime minister Mark Carney announced that his country planned to formally recognise Palestine during the upcoming UN general assembly in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada\u2019s plans to recognise Palestine follow similar plans announced by France and the UK to formally recognise Palestine, while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/newzealand\">New Zealand<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/all\">Australia<\/a>&nbsp;were also signatories to a declaration that indicates they could follow suit in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Call, which was published by the French foreign minister, Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot, on Wednesday, said that signatories \u201chave already recognised, have expressed or express the willingness or the positive consideration of our countries to recognise the State of Palestine\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signatories include Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Portugal and San Marino, each of which has not yet recognised an independent Palestinian state. They also include Iceland, Ireland, Malta, Norway, Slovenia and Spain, which have.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/emmanuel-macron\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>&nbsp;last week said that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/24\/france-to-recognise-palestinian-state-at-un-general-assembly-macron-says\">France would recognise Palestinian<\/a>&nbsp;statehood in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement, which was published before the conclusion of a three-day UN conference set on reviving a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, also said the states would \u201creiterate our unwavering commitment to the vision of the two-state solution where two democratic states,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\">Israel<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/palestinian-territories\">Palestine<\/a>, live side by side in peace within secure and recognised borders\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It stressed the \u201cimportance of unifying the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\">Gaza<\/a>Strip with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday evening, prime minister Mark Carney said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada\">Canada<\/a>&nbsp;would recognise the state of Palestine at the upcoming UN general assembly in September if certain conditions were met. The announcement came after<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Carney held a virtual cabinet meeting on the Middle East on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carney said that Canada would recognise Palestine if the Palestinian Authority, the body that governs the occupied West Bank, would hold an election in 2026 in which Hamas could play no part and agree to other democratic reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carney called on Hamas to release all hostages held by the militant group, disarm, and play no role in the future governance of Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remarks come amid growing pressure on Israel to end its military campaign in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\">Gaza<\/a>, which began in October 2023 in response to a Hamas raid that led to the deaths of 1,200 people, mainly Israelis, and the taking of more than 250 prisoners. More than 60,000 people have died in Gaza in the ensuing conflict, according to the Hamas-led health ministry in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keir Starmer on Tuesday said that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/jul\/29\/uk-to-recognise-state-of-palestine-in-september-unless-israel-holds-to-a-ceasefire\">the United Kingdom would recognise the state of in September<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cunless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"46930574-0dc4-4187-9d53-56ed2d485739\"><a class=\"dcr-1m887w9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/jul\/29\/uk-to-palestine-mean\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/03456ba03974eb6bde0848584dec0b023b5a6c16\/820_0_4583_3667\/master\/4583.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=6c12421a9e9078c694c85fb7337f698d\" alt=\"Keir Starmer delivers a statement inside No 10 Downing Street\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;had initially said he didn\u2019t \u201cmind [Starmer] taking a position. I\u2019m looking for getting people fed right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But later he condemned the decision to recognise a Palestinian state, saying onboard Air Force One that \u201cyou could make the case that you\u2019re rewarding Hamas if you do that. I don\u2019t think they should be rewarded. So I\u2019m not in that camp, to be honest \u2026 because if you do that you are really rewarding Hamas. And I\u2019m not about to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said this week that he wanted to time a recognition of Palestinian statehood to help deliver a breakthrough in negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re looking at is the circumstances where recognition will advance the objective of the creation of two states,\u201d Albanese said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy entire political life, I\u2019ve said I support two states, the right of Israel to exist within secure borders and the right of Palestinians to have their legitimate aspirations for their own state realised. That\u2019s my objective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel\u2019s ambassador to the UN, Danny Damon, condemned the declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile our hostages are languishing in Hamas terror tunnels in Gaza, these countries choose to engage in hollow statements instead of investing their efforts in their release,\u201d said Damon. \u201cThis is hypocrisy and a waste of time that legitimises terrorism and distances any chance of regional progress.
