The government and COCOBOD have set the new producer price at GH\u20b53,625 per 64-kg bag, equivalent to GH\u20b558,000 per tonne, effective Friday, October 3, 2025. This represents a 12.27% increase over the GH\u20b53,228.75 per bag price announced just two months ago in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Farmers Say Increment Fails to Match Rising Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n While officials tout the rise as proof of government\u2019s commitment to farmer welfare, many farmers say they feel \u201cshortchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is insignificant compared to what we spend on fertilizer, labour, transport, and chemicals,\u201d a farmer in the Western North Region told Nsemgh. \u201cEven though they have added GH\u20b5396 more per bag, our input costs have doubled. This is no relief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n They argue that despite the increment, farmers are still receiving less than the promised 70% share of the Free-On-Board (FOB) price, a pledge President John Mahama reiterated during his campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By farmer calculations, if the 70% benchmark were being honored, each bag should fetch GH\u20b54,000 or more, not GH\u20b53,625.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Broken Promises & Political Fallout<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Farmer groups have accused Mahama of betraying their trust. \u201cMahama lied to us during his campaign,\u201d one union leader fumed. \u201cHe promised fair prices, but what we see now is politics at the expense of farmers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some have hinted at protest actions, while others warn of smuggling to Ivory Coast and Togo, where they claim better farmgate prices are being offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe four years is not far,\u201d another farmer warned. \u201cWe will show the NDC at the polls. Farmers will not be taken for granted again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Analysts Warn of Consequences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Experts say the political stakes are high. Cocoa remains Ghana\u2019s top export and the lifeline for over 800,000 households.
