{"id":46890,"date":"2025-10-12T04:57:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T04:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=46890"},"modified":"2025-10-12T04:57:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T04:57:22","slug":"uk-proposes-temporary-visas-for-82-mid-skill-jobs-artists-hr-carpenters-among-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2025\/10\/12\/uk-proposes-temporary-visas-for-82-mid-skill-jobs-artists-hr-carpenters-among-them\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Proposes Temporary Visas for 82 Mid-Skill Jobs \u2014 Artists, HR, Carpenters Among Them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a bold shift in immigration policy, the United Kingdom is exploring a new pathway to fill pressing labour gaps by allowing foreign nationals to take up mid-skilled jobs previously excluded from visa eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 9 October 2025, the UK government\u2019s Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) released its Stage 1 report recommending that 82 occupations be considered for access to what is being called a Temporary Shortage List (TSL) of visa-eligible roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What the new route would allow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the proposed framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Workers in the selected roles would be granted temporary visas lasting 3 to 5 years. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visa holders could potentially switch to higher-skilled roles (i.e. into the standard \u201cSkilled Worker\u201d visa route) if they meet the required criteria. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The minimum English language level is proposed at B1. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The MAC is clear that this is not a permanent path to settlement under current rules \u2014 the emphasis is on temporary relief in sectors struggling with labour shortages. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which jobs are on the list<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the 82 roles advanced for further review are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creative &amp; cultural roles: artists, writers, translators, musicians, actors, photographers, designers \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Construction, trade, technical roles: carpenters, plumbers, welders, building technicians, metalworkers \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Office, administrative &amp; business: HR officers, project support officers, business associate professionals \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical \/ engineering support: electrical &amp; electronics technicians, engineering technicians, CAD\/architectural technicians \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be noted that inclusion in this list is not final \u2014 the MAC will require further evaluation in Stage 2, including a Call for Evidence and sector \u201cJobs Plans\u201d for how domestic labour will be prioritized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why the UK is doing this<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent changes in UK immigration rules raised the required skill threshold for the standard Skilled Worker visa to degree-level (RQF 6), effectively cutting off many mid-skilled roles unless they are added to the TSL.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MAC\u2019s brief is to strike a balance: prevent overreliance on migration while ensuring critical roles that domestic supply cannot fill are still staffed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to watch out for<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Stage 1 list is provisional \u2014 a smaller, final list will be published in July 2026. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employers will have to demonstrate credible Jobs Plans showing how they will reduce reliance on migrant labour and invest in local training. \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visas under TSL are not guaranteed settlement rights, and dependants may not always be allowed. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">www.nsemgh.com<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a bold shift in immigration policy, the United Kingdom is exploring a new pathway to fill pressing labour gaps by allowing foreign nationals to take up mid-skilled jobs previously excluded from visa eligibility.
