Donald Trump\u00a0announced on Saturday that he will raise US tariffs on Canada by 10% in retaliation for\u00a0an anti-tariff advertisement\u00a0sponsored by the Ontario government, which has further strained one of the world\u2019s largest trade partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement, posted on Trump\u2019s Truth Social account, came after several days of public disputes over the ad, which referenced Ronald Reagan\u2019s support for free trade and provoked the US president\u2019s anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,\u201d Trump said Saturday on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further accused the ad of being a \u201cfraud\u201d and said the \u201csole purpose\u201d of it was \u201cCanada\u2019s hope that the United States Supreme Court will come to their \u2018rescue\u2019 on Tariffs<\/a> that they have used for years to hurt the United States\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow the United States is able to defend itself against high and overbearing Canadian Tariffs (and those from the rest of the World as well!),\u201d the president wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ontario premier Doug Ford said Friday that the province will suspend its US ad campaign on Monday, following discussions with prime minister Mark Carney<\/a>, in an effort to reopen trade negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ad, which was paid for by the government of the Canadian province of Ontario, uses excerpts of a 1987 speech where Reagan says \u201ctrade barriers hurt every American worker\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump responded by terminating trade talks<\/a> with Canada, posting on social media that Canada had \u201cfraudulently used an advertismen t[sic]\u201d which he called \u201cFAKE\u201d, and accused the country of trying to interfere with US court decisions on the levies. \u201cBased on their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candace Laing, president of the Canadian chamber of commerce, responded: \u201cTariffs at any level remain a tax on America first, then North American competitiveness as a whole. We hope this threat of escalation can be resolved through diplomatic channels and further negotiation. CUSMA [the Canada\u2013United States\u2013Mexico Agreement] means a North America where businesses do better. A successful free trade zone is fundamental for both our economies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute, a non-profit organization that works to advance his legacy and principles, wrote in a post on X that Ontario did not seek or receive permission to use the clips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foundation said in a statement that the advert used \u201cselective audio and video\u201d and \u201cmisrepresents\u201d Reagan\u2019s comments. It said it was \u201creviewing its legal options\u201d, which Trump cited in his Truth Social post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
