Margus Tsahkna, the Estonian foreign minister, said it was \u201cpretty obvious\u201d that the Kremlin was not interested in peace as European leaders reacted on Wednesday to apparently fruitless talks in Moscow between US envoys and Putin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Britain,\u00a0<strong>King Charles spoke directly of \u201cRussian aggression\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as he hosted Germany\u2019s president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The monarch said both countries \u201ctogether stand with Ukraine and bolster Europe against the threat of further Russian aggression\u201d. The king has strongly supported Ukraine\u2019s fight since the outset of the Russian invasion. His latest remarks\u00a0<strong>may prick the ears of Donald Trump<\/strong>, who, after once haranguing Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/23\/trump-ukraine-land-lost-russia-nato-oil-imports-un-speech\">drastically changed his tune, at least for a time<\/a>, after Charles indulged the US president with a state visit and impressed upon him the broader importance of Ukraine\u2019s defence. The king also\u00a0met Zelenskky directly after Trump and Vance humiliated Ukraine\u2019s president\u00a0at the White House.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/03\/the-ukraine-peace-deal-has-stumbled-yet-again-over-an-inevitable-obstacle-putin\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trump on Wednesday continued to loosely preside over attempts to strike a peace deal<\/strong>. In vague remarks the US president said the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/04\/trump-ukraine-peace-envoys-prepare-meet-kyiv-official\">path ahead was unclear<\/a>\u00a0though talks between his envoys and Vladimir Putin had been \u201creasonably good\u201d. Those talks failed to produce any breakthrough or visible progress. Trump said Putin would like to make a deal but \u201cwhat comes out of that meeting I can\u2019t tell you because it does take two to tango\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The US had \u201csomething pretty well worked out [with Ukraine]\u201d, Trump continued. The Kremlin said Putin accepted some US proposals aimed at ending the war in Ukraine but \u201ccompromises have not yet been found\u201d. Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy, the real estate dealer Steve Witkoff, and the president\u2019s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will\u00a0<strong>meet with top\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov<\/strong><strong>\u00a0in Florida on Thursday<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Romanian military said it\u00a0<strong>blew up a maritime drone that was endangering navigation in the Black Sea<\/strong>\u00a0and claimed it was a Sea Baby used by Ukraine\u2019s security forces. Ukraine\u2019s SBU, which runs covert warfare operations, said all of its Sea Baby drones active in the Black Sea region were accounted for, with none lost or in Romanian waters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ukraine\u2019s military general staff announced recent strikes on\u00a0<strong>Russian targets including an oil depot in Russia\u2019s Tambov region<\/strong>; a Black Sea observation post on an oil rig; and Russian Orion drones based at the Saki airfield in illegally occupied Crimea. Damage of two oil tanks was confirmed after the Livny oil depot in the Oryol region of Russia was hit on Tuesday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In other battlefield updates, the Ukrainian military said it had\u00a0<strong>pushed Russian forces back to the northern outskirts of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Kupyansk<\/strong>\u00a0in Kharkiv oblast, north-eastern Ukraine, and created a \u201ckill zone\u201d hampering the invaders\u2019 return. The Institute for the Study of War meanwhile said\u00a0<strong>Putin had exaggerated Russia\u2019s claimed seizure of Pokrovsk as strategically important.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cISW has not observed evidence to confirm the complete Russian seizure of Pokrovsk, but Russia\u2019s seizure of the town in the near future is unlikely to produce rapid Russian advances.\u201d The Ukrainian military has denied completely losing Pokrovsk. The Associated Press said drone footage showed Myrnohrad, near Pokrovsk in eastern Donetsk, was largely in ruins and nearly surrounded by Russian troops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Britain and Norway will jointly operate a warship fleet to\u00a0<strong>hunt Russian submarines in the north Atlantic<\/strong>. The aim is to protect undersea infrastructure such as cables that western officials say are increasingly under threat from Moscow. Britain\u2019s Ministry of Defence reports that sightings of Russian vessels in UK waters have increased 30% in the past two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"66ed1b00-6850-4601-8a47-181a98254a26\"><a class=\"dcr-1m887w9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/03\/european-commission-reparations-loan-ukraine-frozen-russian-assets\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/71aa6ec836e786402686f241348800ff78e8140f\/0_0_4998_4000\/master\/4998.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=bc52b7621f8c632594fb3adfcaea19c2\" alt=\"Ukrainian serviceman fires a howitzer: he is almost silhouetted in the glow of its flames. He is crouching under netting next to a wooden palette and small rural outbuilding. \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The European Commission will move ahead with funding Ukraine using a loan based on Russia\u2019s frozen assets<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/03\/european-commission-reparations-loan-ukraine-frozen-russian-assets\">write Jennifer Rankin and Shaun Walker<\/a>. But in a concession to concerns raised by Belgium, which hosts most of the assets, the EU executive has also proposed another option: an EU loan based on common borrowing. The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Wednesday the two proposals would ensure \u201cUkraine has the means to defend [itself] and take forward peace negotiations from a position of strength\u201d. EU leaders will be asked to decide on the options later this month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The UN general assembly has called for the\u00a0<strong>immediate and unconditional return of Ukrainian children \u201cforcibly transferred\u201d to Russia<\/strong>. The assembly adopted the non-binding resolution by a vote of 91-12, with 57 abstentions. Russia was among the states rejecting the measure. Ukraine accuses Russia of abducting at least 20,000 Ukrainian children since the start of the conflict in February 2022. On Wednesday the Russian ambassador was represented by an empty chair after failing to show up at a US Senate hearing about the children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Australia and New Zealand will become the\u00a0<strong>first non-Nato countries to contribute to a fund buying critical military equipment for Ukraine<\/strong>. It includes a A$50m contribution to Purl \u2013 the \u201cprioritised Ukraine requirements list\u201d under which Nato buys arms for Ukraine from the US. Australian Defence Force supplies and weapons worth $43m will also be donated including tactical air defence radars, munitions and combat engineering equipment. An extra $2m will be provided to help Ukraine with advanced drone technologies. It brings Australia\u2019s total support to more than $1.7bn since the start of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022. In the coming weeks, the final group of 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks gifted by Australia will be delivered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Australia has also sanctioned a further 45 \u201cshadow fleet\u201d ships<\/strong>\u00a0that Russia uses in attempting to evade sanctions on its oil exports; and aimed financial sanctions and travel bans at more than 1,180 people and 293 entities. Australia\u2019s foreign minister, Penny Wong, said due to the government\u2019s actions, direct Australian imports of Russian energy products had fallen from $80m to zero. However a\u00a0<strong>sanctions \u201cloophole\u201d has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/nov\/09\/loophole-russian-sanctions-oil-imported-to-australia\">allowed Russian oil products refined elsewhere to find their way to Australia<\/a><\/strong>.
