{"id":52692,"date":"2026-07-20T19:15:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T19:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=52692"},"modified":"2026-07-20T19:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T19:15:09","slug":"afghanistan-floods-20-killed-100-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2026\/07\/20\/afghanistan-floods-20-killed-100-missing\/","title":{"rendered":"Afghanistan floods: 20 killed 100+ missing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 20 people have been killed and more than 80 injured in flooding that hit Afghanistan\u2019s Nuristan province, the country\u2019s disaster management agency said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Parun, the provincial capital, a further 105 people including the mayor were missing, said Feraidon Samim, a spokesperson for the Nuristan governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalists familiar with the remote north-eastern area said a market, shops and other buildings were located near Parun\u2019s riverside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashiqullah Safi, the head of an NGO based in the town, said the flood had \u201ccompletely destroyed the municipality\u201d, including hotels and dozens of shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that flood waters had left big boulders in the town and residents were searching for the missing without equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghanistan\u2019s national disaster management agency said floods had caused \u201csevere financial and human losses\u201d in Parun, where efforts were under way to rescue the injured and recover the bodies of those killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Afghan government, posted on X to confirm reports of deaths and property damage in Nuristan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, the head of Afghanistan\u2019s environmental protection agency, Matiul Haq Khalis, said flooding in the country had increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said environmental problems \u201chave severely affected the Afghan people and have contributed to a humanitarian crisis in the country\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extreme rainfall has become more common and more intense across most of the world because of the human-caused climate crisis.
