{"id":8189,"date":"2019-09-11T07:44:19","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T07:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=8189"},"modified":"2019-10-26T18:03:30","modified_gmt":"2019-10-26T18:03:30","slug":"shell-losing-560000-a-day-to-nigeria-oil-thieves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2019\/09\/11\/shell-losing-560000-a-day-to-nigeria-oil-thieves\/","title":{"rendered":"Shell &#8216;losing $560,000 a day to Nigeria oil thieves&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Shell\u2019s subsidiary in Nigeria says the oil giant is losing 10,000 barrels of oil a day to thieves in the West African nation \u2013 at a cost of $560,000 (\u00a3452,000) a day.<\/h2>\n<p>The losses by vandals attacking oil pipelines in the southern Niger Delta are equivalent to $204.4m over a year.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made by Igo Weli, general manager of the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), which is a joint venture between Shell and the Nigerian government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese attacks were on critical assets that produce the crude oil, which accounts for over 90% of Nigeria\u2019s foreign exchange earnings and the bulk of government revenue,\u201d Mr Weli is quoted as telling a workshop on pipeline vandalism in the oil city of Port Harcourt on Monday.<ins id=\"revive-0-3\" data-revive-zoneid=\"20\" data-revive-id=\"9498a47af2f5e17dd932fffda2cedac3\" data-revive-seq=\"3\" data-revive-loaded=\"1\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"beacon_31de8cc884\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.graphic.com.gh\/adsonline\/www\/delivery\/lg.php?bannerid=96&amp;campaignid=14&amp;zoneid=20&amp;loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.graphic.com.gh%2Finternational%2Finternational-news%2Fshell-losing-560-000-a-day-to-nigeria-oil-thieves.html&amp;referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.graphic.com.gh%2F&amp;cb=31de8cc884\" alt=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/p>\n<p>Since 2012 he said the company had discovered and removed 1,160 points where thieves were stealing the oil.<\/p>\n<p>But this did not seem to be stemming the problem as 9,000 barrels a day were being stolen in 2017, 11,000 last year and 10,000 this year.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Weli was also critical of a lack of development in the Niger Delta, where most people remain poor despite the vast wetlands rich oil resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a community in the Niger Delta that has received over 2bn naira ($5.5m, \u00a34.5m) from SPDC joint venture for its development, but is yet to develop,\u201d the Premium Times quotes him as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe region receives 13% derivation, revenue from NDDC [the Niger Delta Development Commission government agency] and funds from companies, but still has not developed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Niger Delta has refused to develop despite the huge monies allocated to the area.
