Sai is dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Fred Torgbor Sai, one of Ghana\u2019s renowned Physicians in Reproductive Health and a supporter of women\u2019s rights has died at 95.<\/p>\n<p>The 2006 receipient of one Ghana\u2019s highest awards,\u00a0Order of the Star of Ghana is the father of former minister under the Kufuor administration,\u00a0Florence Oboshie Sai-Coffie.<\/p>\n<p>Based on Sai&#8217;s advocacy, in 2007, the government\u00a0of John Agyekum Kufuor\u00a0introduced free maternal health\u00a0services as an avenue to reduce maternal mortality among adolescent girls and young women.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/96781434.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for prof sai\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fsi.ppag-gh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fredsaiawards_kokuipix-001-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for prof sai\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He has also served as Professor of Preventive and Social Medicine at the University of Ghana Medical School.<\/p>\n<p>His passion to support more women to read Basic and Applied Sciences at the University became evident after the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), Cairo in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Having won the Prince Mahidol Award in Bangkok in 1995, for International Leadership and Advocacy of Gender Equity, Reproductive Health, Family Planning and Population, he donated $20,000 of his prize money to the University of Ghana towards the establishment of a fund to encourage women to read courses in the under-represented fields of science.<\/p>\n<p>More than fifty students have benefited from this fund.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Fred T. Sai Institute,\u00a0an initiative of the IPPF\u00a0Africa Region, was established in Sai&#8217;s honour as a &#8220;pioneer public health research institute, championing research on population and sexual reproductive health&#8230;to generate evidence on effective health strategies aimed at improving the health of the population in sub-Saharan Africa\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UNFPA Ghana Office confirmed his death in a facebook post and expressed condolences to the family.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>source:myjoyonline<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Fred Torgbor Sai, one of Ghana\u2019s renowned Physicians in Reproductive Health and a supporter of women\u2019s rights has died at 95.
