Confidence Counts When Taking Penalties – Coach Michael Osei

Assistant coach for the Black Meteors, Michael Osei has revealed that, player confidence is a key factor when it comes to taking penalty shoot-outs.

Osei said, one will be good at training but finds it difficult in competitive matches due to pressure.

¨ We practiced penalty kicks at training, but it is different when it comes to main match because there is more tension. So if the player is not confident and composed, it will be difficult for the player to score ̈.

̈ So for penalties, it’s all about confidence and a lot of big players do miss penalties too ̈.

He also rubbished calls that, Ghanaian coaches are lazy when it comes to teaching the players as to how to take penalty kicks.

¨ I overheard someone claiming to be a coach in America accusing the Ghanaian coaches for not teaching their players the techniques of taking penalties, but I believe technical persons wouldn’t say such a thing knowing that, penalty kicks require confidence ̈.

Coach Osei who is the head coach of division 1 side Star Madrid, expressed his disappointment on the team ́s failure to qualify for next year ́s Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan.
