Australia: Anthony Albanese to form Next Government

Although the election has been called for Labor – and Anthony Albanese looks set to be Australia’s next PM – his party is still four seats away from the halfway mark, 76.

It needs at least that many seats in the 151-strong lower house to form the government by itself.

If not, analysts expect a tie-up with independent and minor parties that will get Labor over the line.

Labour’s Sally Sitou was half-way through her victory speech when her supporters realised the party had won – and they broke out in cheers.

Labor is still four seats short of the 76-mark for a majorty government, but that could change in the coming hours.
