Legendary Highlife Icon Daddy Lumba to Receive State Burial

Ghana is set to honour one of its most celebrated musical icons, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, with a befitting state burial. The government announced this decision following confirmation of the legendary highlife musician’s passing earlier this week.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Office of the President, stated that Daddy Lumba’s immense contribution to Ghana’s music industry, spanning over four decades, merits the highest national recognition. According to the statement, a state funeral committee will be established to plan and coordinate all funeral arrangements in consultation with the family.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Daddy Lumba as a “national treasure whose music defined a generation and whose legacy will inspire many more to come.” He added that the state burial will be a tribute not only to his artistry but also to the role he played in promoting Ghanaian culture globally.
Daddy Lumba, known for timeless hits like “Aben Wo Ha,” “Theresa,” and “Yentie Obiaa,” released over 30 albums, mentored numerous musicians, and remained a household name throughout his career. He was also a recipient of numerous awards, including the Ghana Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honour.
Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow musicians, politicians, and dignitaries across the country and the diaspora, all echoing the sentiment that Ghana has lost a musical legend.
More details on the funeral arrangements and public memorials are expected to be announced in the coming days.
