GFA Congress Votes to Extend Presidential Term Limit to Three Terms

In a significant move at the Ghana Football Association’s 31st Ordinary Congress in Prampram, the delegates overwhelmingly approved amending the GFA statutes to extend the presidential term limit from two to three four‑year terms. The motion received 114 votes in favor, with only six against and three abstentions  .

The change, aligned with statutes of both FIFA and CAF, is intended to foster leadership continuity and support the execution of long-range development plans across Ghanaian football  . Despite speculation about possible implications for the incumbent, GFA President Kurt Okraku, he stated that he has not yet decided whether to contest a third term when his current tenure ends in 2027  .

Contrary to some concerns, there is no substantiated report or suggestion of coercive or manipulative tactics—such as “communist‑style” methods—being used to sway the vote. The process appears to have followed standard parliamentary procedures, with delegates freely casting their ballots.

Critics remain wary that extending term limits might stifle fresh leadership, urging stronger governance checks and transparency measures. However, proponents argue that many football development programs require consistent oversight that only extended terms can offer
