Stanbic Bank Contributes GH₵500,000 to Children’s Support Fund for Victims of August 6 Helicopter Crash

In a powerful demonstration of compassion and national solidarity, Stanbic Bank has contributed an initial GH₵500,000 to seed the newly established Children’s Support Fund for the families of the eight individuals who tragically perished in the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash on August 6. This support was announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the funeral ceremony held on August 15.
The fund, now formally named the “Fund for the Children of the Victims of August 6”, is designed to secure the futures of the bereaved children. It will cover:
- Education from primary school through to university or technical training;
- Healthcare, including medical insurance and specialized treatment if required;
- Welfare support, such as clothing, shelter, and other essential living expenses.
President Mahama expressed deep grief, calling the crash “a national tragedy that has cast its shadow over the heart of Ghana.” He pledged that the government would make an immediate contribution to the fund and that a detailed operational framework—including mechanisms for transparency and annual reporting, public and international participation—would be published within 30 days.
He invited citizens, corporate bodies, and international partners to join in supporting the children, stressing that by caring for them, “Ghana honours its fallen patriots.”
Why This Matters
The tragic crash claimed the lives of:
- Two high-ranking ministers: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed;
- The Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna;
- Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate;
- NDC Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong;
- Three Ghana Armed Forces crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo‐Mensah.
With many left behind, including very young children—some still in school, even infants—the fund seeks to shield them from the hardships of losing their parents.
