DSTV Negotiations End in Value Offers, Not Price Cuts – Ghanaians Disappointed in Sam George

The much-anticipated outcome of negotiations between Communications Minister Sam George and DSTV has left Ghanaians disappointed, as the satellite service provider introduced “value-added offers” instead of the expected price reductions.
For months, Sam George led strong arguments that DSTV must reduce subscription rates, citing examples from Angola, Nigeria, and other African countries where customers pay significantly less. His stance won the backing of many Ghanaians who have long complained about DSTV’s high charges in Ghana.
However, DSTV spokesperson Mr. Okyere revealed that the company could not implement the reduction “in the manner the minister presented it.” Instead, DSTV rolled out increased value packages – giving more channels and add-ons for the same price – rather than cutting costs.
Many subscribers feel shortchanged, as their demand was simple: lower bills, not “extra value” they did not request. To them, the outcome reflects a failure in negotiation, as DSTV appears to have acted in its own interest rather than adhering to the minister’s promise to the public.
Ghanaians are now questioning Sam George’s bargaining strength, describing the development as a huge disappointment. What was seen as a bold push for consumer relief has, in reality, turned into a compromise that does little to ease household expenses.
For most citizens, the verdict is clear: “We asked for price reduction, not more channels.”
