The Government of Ghana has declared a three-day national mourning period following the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.

According to a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on behalf of the Presidency, the period of mourning will run from Friday, 24 October to Sunday, 26 October 2025.

Flags at Half-Mast

All national flags at public institutions, government offices and Ghana’s diplomatic missions worldwide will be flown at half-mast during the mourning period. The gesture is made “in honour of her memory and in recognition of her distinguished service to the nation.”

A Life of Service Remembered

Nana Konadu served as First Lady and was the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement — an organisation that played a pivotal role in mobilising women for socio-economic empowerment in Ghana.  The government statement emphasised her lifelong commitment to women’s empowerment, child welfare and social development.

Condolences and National Reflection

“The Government extends its deepest condolences to the family, her children, and all who mourn this irreplaceable loss. May her soul rest in perfect peace.” the statement adds.  Tributes have been pouring in across the country from political leaders, civil society groups, and the general public.

What Next?

Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be announced in due course by the family in consultation with the state. The official mourning period enables the nation to pause, reflect on her legacy and pay respect to a leader whose impact spanned decades.
