Mahama Swears In Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as New Chief Justice of Ghana
Ghana has a new head of the Judiciary. President John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, 17 November 2025, officially swore in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the 16th Chief Justice of the Republic at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a respected jurist with over four decades of experience, had earlier received unanimous parliamentary approval on 13 November 2025 after his nomination by President Mahama on 23 September 2025. His appointment follows the suspension and subsequent exit of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama described Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as “a man of integrity, depth, and judicial discipline whose experience will help restore public confidence in the courts.”
The President noted that the Judiciary is entering a critical period, adding that his administration expects the new Chief Justice to lead reforms in judicial accountability, case-backlog management, and digitalisation of court processes.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to protect the independence of the Judiciary while strengthening ethical standards across all levels of the judicial service. He vowed to promote faster justice delivery and ensure that the courts remain accessible to the ordinary Ghanaian.
Prior to his new role, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie served as a Supreme Court Judge, and earlier as a High Court and Court of Appeal judge. He also briefly acted as Chief Justice during the transition period.
His swearing-in marks a significant shift in Ghana’s justice system as the Mahama administration pushes for a more transparent and efficient Judiciary.
