HSG Champions Sustainable Mining in Sierra Leone and Ghana
Harnessing Sustainable Growth (HSG), a rapidly emerging leader in sustainable mining and community-focused land restoration, has announced a major expansion of its work in Sierra Leone and Ghana aimed at promoting responsible mining practices, restoring degraded lands, and empowering rural communities.
Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Haddy Ceesay, HSG is positioning itself as a model for how Africa can move beyond destructive artisanal mining—commonly known as galamsey—towards a system that protects the environment, supports local livelihoods, and strengthens national economies.
With strategic partnerships across the continent, including its newest collaboration with Ohakk 2 Consults Ltd in Ghana, HSG is implementing a forward-thinking framework that blends modern mining standards, community engagement, reclamation science, and policy advocacy.
A New Model for Sustainable Mining in Africa
HSG’s approach focuses on three core pillars:
✅ Environmentally responsible mining operations that reduce land destruction, water contamination, and unsafe extraction practices
✅ Land reclamation and reforestation programs that restore mined-out areas for agriculture, forestry, and community development
✅ Community empowerment and advocacy, ensuring local populations benefit through skills training, employment, and long-term land use planning
CEO Haddy Ceesay emphasized HSG’s mission:
“Africa deserves mining that builds—not destroys. Our goal is to prove that responsible mineral extraction can coexist with thriving communities, restored landscapes, and sustainable livelihoods. What we are doing in Sierra Leone and Ghana will become a blueprint for the continent.”
Impact in Rural Communities
In rural Sierra Leone, HSG has already begun:
- Reclaiming degraded mining lands
- Training youth and women in sustainable mining skills
- Supporting alternative livelihoods such as agriculture and eco-enterprises
- Introducing safe mining methods that reduce health and environmental risks
- Partnering with community leaders to ensure transparent and inclusive development
Through its partnership with Ohakk 2 Consults Ltd, HSG is adapting these successes for the Ghanaian context, where illegal mining has caused severe land degradation, deforestation, and pollution of major rivers.
A United Front Against Galamsey
The collaboration between HSG and Ohakk 2 Consults Ltd seeks to present a replicable African-led model that governments, private sector players, and mining communities can adopt to eliminate illegal mining practices.
Ohakk 2 Consults Ltd founder and sustainability advocate Ohene Akoto noted:
“This partnership proves that African expertise and innovation can solve African challenges. By integrating sustainable mining and land reclamation, we are offering Ghana and West Africa a realistic pathway to eradicate galamsey and restore communities.”
Continental Network and Advocacy
HSG’s initiatives are supported by a growing network of:
- Environmental specialists
- Mining engineers
- Community development experts
- Policy advocates
- International sustainability partners
Together, they are working to influence policy reforms and promote responsible mining frameworks across West Africa.
Looking Ahead
HSG plans to:
- Scale land reclamation programs in multiple districts
- Establish demonstration sites for sustainable mining practices
- Expand community training centers
- Strengthen partnerships with governments and environmental agencies
- Develop research-based models for long-term rehabilitation of mining zones
