Ghana Condemns “Inhumane” Treatment of Its Citizens at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport
The Government of Ghana has issued a strong protest against what it describes as ill-treatment, humiliation, and unjustified targeting of Ghanaian travellers by Israeli authorities at the Ben Gurion International Airport.
In an official press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed deep concern over incidents that began on Sunday, 7th December 2025, during which several Ghanaians were detained and subjected to what the ministry calls “inhumane and traumatic treatment.”
Seven Ghanaians Detained Without Cause
According to the statement, seven (7) Ghanaian nationals travelling to Israel were detained at the airport without any legitimate explanation.
Among the detained were four members of Ghana’s Parliamentary delegation participating in the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv.
They were only released after more than five hours of strenuous diplomatic intervention by Ghana’s mission in Israel.
Three Deported Despite Diplomatic Engagement
The remaining three travellers were placed on the next available return flight and have since arrived in Ghana.
The government described the deportation as unfair and unwarranted, stressing that the actions of Israeli authorities amounted to a targeted and discriminatory approach towards Ghanaian citizens.
Israel’s Justification Rejected
Tel Aviv authorities reportedly justified their actions by alleging a lack of cooperation from Ghana’s Embassy in facilitating deportation procedures.
However, Ghana firmly rejected this claim, describing it as “totally untenable” and asserting that its mission has always acted professionally and in accordance with international law.
Relations Strained Despite Decades of Friendship
Ghana noted that it has enjoyed over six decades of cordial relations with Israel, supported by high volumes of mutual travel and cooperation.
The ministry labelled the recent treatment as “provocative, unacceptable, and inconsistent with our friendly historical relations.”
Government Summons Israeli Embassy Officials
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra will be summoned immediately to receive Ghana’s formal protest and an expression of its displeasure “in the strongest possible terms.”
Possible Reciprocal Action
The government further disclosed that appropriate reciprocal measures are being considered should such incidents persist.
