Parliament of Ghana has passed the Sports Development Fund Bill, marking a major step toward strengthening sports financing and development across the country.

The new legislation establishes a dedicated Sports Development Fund aimed at providing sustainable funding for sports infrastructure, athlete development, grassroots programs, and the promotion of lesser-known sports disciplines. The fund is expected to reduce the long-standing financial constraints facing sports federations and associations.

Under the bill, resources mobilised through the fund will support the construction and rehabilitation of sporting facilities, training and preparation of national teams, talent identification at the grassroots level, and welfare programs for athletes. It will also enhance Ghana’s capacity to host international sporting events.

Lawmakers described the passage of the bill as timely, noting that consistent funding is essential for reviving school sports, nurturing young talents, and improving Ghana’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage.

The bill is aligned with the policy direction of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which has repeatedly called for innovative financing mechanisms to support sports development beyond annual budget allocations.

Stakeholders in the sports sector, including coaches, athletes, and administrators, have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that the fund will bring transparency, accountability, and long-term planning into sports financing.

With parliamentary approval secured, the Sports Development Fund Bill is expected to receive presidential assent before implementation guidelines are rolled out.
