One Dead, Several ‘Acid-Bathed’ as Mankessim and Ekumfi Youth Clash
A violent confrontation between youth groups from Mankessim and Ekumfi has left one person dead and several others severely injured after being allegedly bathed with acid.
The clash, which erupted on 3 rd January 2025 plunged the affected communities into fear and confusion as angry youth wielded weapons and reportedly used corrosive substances during the violence. Eyewitnesses said the confrontation escalated rapidly, resulting in critical injuries to multiple victims, some of whom are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.
Sources within the communities suggest that the violence may be linked to long-standing tensions, including land-related disputes and chieftaincy disagreements, though official confirmation is still pending. Residents described scenes of chaos as people fled for safety while others rushed the injured to hospital.
Local authorities confirmed the death of one individual but declined to release further details pending investigations. Security agencies have since been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent any reprisal attacks.
The Central Regional Police Command has launched a full investigation into the incident and is appealing to residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement. Meanwhile, traditional leaders and opinion leaders from both Mankessim and Ekumfi are expected to engage in dialogue to de-escalate tensions and restore peace.
Community members have also called on government and civil society organisations to intervene, citing the alarming use of acid and the increasing trend of youth violence in parts of the region.
