The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to American internet personality Darren Watkins Jr., better known as IShowSpeed, following his widely publicised visit to the country.

In a statement posted on social media, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, saying the ministry acted after confirming IShowSpeed’s personal and cultural ties to Ghana.

“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to IShowSpeed,” the Minister wrote.

The announcement follows the conclusion of IShowSpeed’s recent “Speed Does Africa” tour, which drew global attention as he livestreamed his experiences across several countries and concluded with a high-energy visit to Ghana on Monday, January 26.

During his stay, the streamer participated in various cultural engagements, including a traditional enstoolment ceremony in Akropong, where he was given the name Barima Kofi Akuffo, and visited iconic sites such as Independence Square and local heritage attractions.

Minister Ablakwa also thanked Ghanaian travel influencer Wode Maya for facilitating the engagement and helping confirm IShowSpeed’s connections to Ghana. He described both men as “worthy ambassadors” of the nation and the African continent.

The move underscores Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with members of the global African diaspora and cultural figures who use their platforms to promote the country’s heritage, tourism, and positive narratives.

As details of the passport issuance continue to emerge, many Ghanaian social media users have reacted with mixed views, reflecting both excitement and curiosity about the implications of granting such recognition to a global content creator.
