U.S. Assures Nigerian Students: Valid F-1 and J-1 Visas Unaffected by Presidential Proclamation 10998

The United States has reassured Nigerian students and exchange participants that holders of valid F-1 and J-1 visas remain unaffected by Presidential Proclamation 10998, easing concerns about possible disruptions to study and exchange programs.

In a statement released on social media, the U.S. Mission Nigeria clarified that Nigerian students and exchange visitors who already possess valid F-1 (student) and J-1 (exchange visitor) visas can continue their academic and professional activities in the United States without interruption.

“Students and exchange participants with currently valid F-1 and J-1 visas are not affected by Presidential Proclamation 10998,” the mission stated. It added that affected individuals can continue to contribute to “learning, research, and innovation” at U.S. colleges and institutions.

The clarification comes amid widespread discussions online about the scope and impact of the proclamation, with many prospective and current international students seeking guidance on whether new travel or immigration restrictions would affect their status. The U.S. Mission emphasized that the proclamation does not invalidate existing visas under the F-1 and J-1 categories.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, noting that it provides certainty for thousands of Nigerian students currently enrolled in U.S. institutions or participating in exchange programs. Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest sources of international students in the United States, contributing significantly to academic research, cultural exchange, and innovation.

The mission encouraged visa holders to stay informed through official U.S. government channels and to ensure they comply with all visa conditions, including maintaining valid status and travel documents. It also reiterated its commitment to transparent communication under the #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign.

For students planning future applications, immigration experts advise monitoring official embassy updates, as policies may differ for new visa applicants compared to those with existing, valid visas.
