Morocco awarded Afcon title after CAF overturns result

Morocco have been declared winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 after the Confederation of African Football overturned the result of their final against Senegal national football team.

Senegal had originally secured a 1-0 victory over Morocco national football team in the final played on 18 January. The match, however, was marred by controversy after Senegalese players briefly refused to continue play when a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to Morocco with the score still level.

The disruption led to a delay of about 17 minutes before the match resumed. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz saw his penalty saved, and Senegal’s Pape Gueye later scored the winning goal in extra time.

Following a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident, CAF has now annulled the result.

In a statement, the continental football body said Senegal are “declared to have forfeited the final match,” with “the result of the match being recorded as 3-0 in favour” of Morocco.

The decision effectively hands Morocco the continental title, bringing an unexpected conclusion to one of the most contentious finals in recent AFCON history.
