Ken Ofori-Atta Released from ICE Custody on $65,000 Bond Amid Health Concerns”

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after being granted bail on a $65,000 bond, with reports indicating that health concerns played a key role in the decision.

Sources close to the proceedings revealed that the court approved his release following arguments presented by his legal team, citing his medical condition as a significant factor in securing bail.

Mr. Ofori-Atta, who had been in ICE detention since January 2026 over immigration-related issues, is now expected to comply with strict bail conditions, including appearing before the court for ongoing proceedings.

Legal insiders also indicate that his release may come with monitoring measures due to concerns about potential flight risk, even though questions surrounding formal extradition documentation remain unresolved.

Earlier court proceedings had highlighted the absence of a clear extradition request from Ghana, a factor that reportedly weakened arguments to keep him in custody.

The case has drawn significant attention both in Ghana and internationally, as authorities continue to pursue legal actions linked to corruption investigations during his tenure as Finance Minister.

Despite his release, the legal battle is far from over. Mr. Ofori-Atta is expected to reappear in a U.S. court later this month as deportation and extradition discussions continue.

His lawyers maintain that he remains committed to due process and will cooperate fully with legal authorities.

The development has sparked mixed reactions in Ghana, with some calling for his immediate return to face justice, while others argue that due process must be respected.

For now, the focus shifts to the next court hearing — where the fate of the former finance minister will be further determined.
