Bagbin unveils new scholarship initiative for MPs

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has inaugurated a scholarship initiative designed to equip Members of Parliament (MPs) and Parliamentary Service staff with advanced academic training to enhance leadership and governance skills.

The scheme, in partnership with NiBS University (Noble University), provides scholarships for doctoral programmes in leadership, governance, and innovation. The launch, held at Parliament House on Monday, June 18, 2025, was themed “Empowering Governance Through Advanced Scholarship” and forms part of the Speaker’s vision to position Parliament as a leading institution for leadership education in Africa.

In his keynote address, Mr. Bagbin highlighted the importance of knowledge in leadership:

“Empowered governance is not achieved through power alone; it is achieved through knowledge, reflection, and moral courage.”

He emphasized that the strength of Ghana’s democracy relies on the quality of minds that sustain it, urging investment in the intellectual and professional growth of MPs and Parliamentary Service staff. The initiative aims to equip beneficiaries with the skills and knowledge to represent constituents effectively and make informed decisions for national development.

The scholarship programme, valued at $108,000, will support 20 recipients in graduate programmes, including a PhD in Business Administration, Doctor of Business Leadership, and Doctor of Public Sector Innovation and Leadership, with awards ranging from $1,399 to $7,599. Applicants must have their forms endorsed by the Speaker.

Professor Kwaku Atuahene-Gima, Founder and President of NiBS University, noted that the scholarship is designed to enhance parliamentary effectiveness, promote lifelong learning, and bridge the gap between academia and governance.

Speaking on Thursday, June 26, Mr. Bagbin reiterated that the initiative reflects a commitment to academic advancement and capacity building. He encouraged MPs and staff to leverage the opportunity to strengthen policy research, legislative analysis, and leadership skills.

Parliamentarians and staff have welcomed the scholarship scheme, praising Speaker Bagbin and NiBS University for supporting education that promotes knowledge sharing, informed decision-making, and national development.
