The Government of Ghana has approved a minimum farmgate price of GH¢12 per kilogram for raw cashew nuts for the 2025/2026 production season, a move aimed at protecting farmers’ incomes and stabilising the cashew value chain.

The decision was taken following consultations with key stakeholders in the cashew industry, including farmer associations, processors, exporters, and regulatory agencies. The new price sets a guaranteed benchmark below which traders are not permitted to purchase raw cashew nuts from farmers.

According to industry sources, the approved price reflects prevailing market conditions, rising input costs, and the need to ensure that cashew farmers receive fair compensation for their produce amid fluctuations in global commodity prices.

Officials say the minimum price policy is intended to curb exploitation of farmers, especially during peak harvest periods when middlemen often dictate prices. It is also expected to improve transparency and encourage increased production in Ghana’s cashew-growing regions.

The cashew sector has become one of Ghana’s most important non-traditional export commodities, providing livelihoods for thousands of smallholder farmers, particularly in the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern, Savannah, and Upper West regions.

Agricultural analysts believe the GH¢12 minimum price will boost farmer confidence and investment in cashew farming, while also supporting the government’s broader agenda of value addition and agro-industrialisation.

However, some exporters have cautioned that strict enforcement and monitoring will be critical to prevent market distortions and ensure compliance across the supply chain.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture is expected to work with relevant agencies to roll out sensitisation programmes and enforcement measures ahead of the start of the 2025/2026 cashew season.
