Carrefour Takes Over Shoprite Franchise in Ghana Through New Partnership
French retail giant Carrefour Group is set to enter the Ghanaian market after taking over Shoprite’s franchise operations through a new partnership with local distributor Brands For All, Nsemgh can confirm.
Under the arrangement, Brands For All, which acquired the seven Shoprite hypermarkets in Ghana in November 2025, will operate the stores under the Carrefour brand, marking a significant shift in the country’s modern retail landscape.
The takeover follows Shoprite Group’s gradual exit from several African markets as part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at refocusing on its core operations in Southern Africa. Ghana is among the West African markets affected by the retail giant’s downsizing plans.
Carrefour, one of the world’s largest food retailers with operations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa, is expected to rebrand the existing Shoprite stores, introduce new private-label products, and expand sourcing from local suppliers.
Industry analysts say the move could intensify competition in Ghana’s retail sector, particularly in the hypermarket segment, while offering consumers wider product variety, competitive pricing, and improved supply chains.
Brands For All is expected to oversee the transition process, including rebranding, staff integration, and operational restructuring, to ensure continuity of service across all seven locations.
While timelines for the full rollout of the Carrefour brand have not yet been officially announced, sources indicate that store conversions will be phased to minimize disruptions to customers and employees.
The development signals renewed international confidence in Ghana’s consumer market, despite current economic pressures, and positions Carrefour as a key player in the country’s evolving retail ecosystem.
Nsemgh will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the transition unfolds.
