Ghana Mourns Legendary Gospel Musician Yaw Sarpong

The Ghanaian music community and the nation at large are in mourning following the passing of legendary gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, founder of the celebrated Asomafo gospel group. He died on 20 January 2026 at the age of 66 after a period of ill health, according to confirmation from his manager, Nana Poku Ashis. 

Yaw Sarpong was widely revered as a trailblazer in contemporary Akan gospel music, with a career spanning nearly five decades. His distinctive musical style, rooted in strong Christian doctrine and rich vocal harmonies, helped shape the sound of modern gospel music in Ghana and inspired generations of musicians. 

Born in Accra and later based in Kumasi, Sarpong rose to prominence as the leader of the Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo Gospel Band, producing timeless classics such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa. These songs remain staples in churches and Christian gatherings across the country. 

His passing comes just weeks after the death of Maame Tiwaa, a longtime member and close musical partner in the Asomafo group, adding to the grief within Ghana’s gospel fraternity. 

In recognition of his immense contribution to the music industry, Yaw Sarpong was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in Ghanaian gospel music. 

Tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and music industry stakeholders, celebrating his life, ministry, and enduring impact on Ghana’s cultural and spiritual landscape. His music continues to be a source of inspiration and solace for many.
