Italy Set to Digitize Schengen Visa Applications From June 2026 — But Questions Remain

aly is reportedly preparing to introduce a largely digital Schengen visa application system from June 1, 2026, a move expected to modernize and simplify the visa process for millions of international travelers. Reports circulating across travel and immigration platforms indicate that applicants may soon be able to complete most visa procedures online, including form filling, document uploads, fee payments, and application tracking.
According to several immigration and travel industry reports, the proposed digital system would apply to both short-stay Schengen visas (Type C) and national long-stay visas (Type D). Repeat travelers whose biometric data already exists in the Visa Information System (VIS) could potentially complete the entire process remotely without visiting an embassy or visa center.
However, first-time applicants are still expected to appear physically for biometric enrollment, including fingerprints and photographs.
The development is seen as part of Europe’s broader push toward digital border and immigration management ahead of the full implementation of systems such as the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and ETIAS travel authorization platform.
Despite widespread online discussions and social media posts celebrating the update, there is still some uncertainty surrounding the rollout. While several visa and travel industry sources claim the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the June 2026 launch date, some publications caution that official Italian government channels have not yet fully verified all operational details publicly.
Currently, Italy’s official visa platform and VFS Global centers continue to process applications through existing procedures.
Travel experts believe that if successfully implemented, the digital visa system could significantly reduce long queues, paperwork, and appointment delays that have affected Schengen visa applicants in recent years. The announcement comes at a time when many European countries are experiencing severe visa appointment shortages ahead of the busy summer travel season.
For applicants in Ghana and other African countries, travelers are advised to continue following current embassy and VFS procedures until official implementation notices are released by Italian diplomatic missions.
