Florida Tightens Immigration Policies with New Restrictions on Undocumented Immigrants

Florida has introduced a series of tougher immigration measures that could make it significantly more difficult for undocumented immigrants to live, work, and access certain services in the state. The latest policies are part of Governor Ron DeSantis’ broader immigration agenda aimed at strengthening enforcement and limiting access to public benefits.  

Among the proposed and recently approved measures are requirements for all private employers to use the federal E-Verify system to confirm the legal status of newly hired workers. Supporters say the move will discourage the employment of undocumented immigrants, while critics argue it could create labour shortages and place additional burdens on businesses.  

Other proposals would prevent undocumented immigrants from opening certain state-chartered bank accounts, restrict access to workers’ compensation benefits, and require driver’s licence examinations to be conducted only in English.  

In a separate move, Florida’s State Board of Education has voted to ban undocumented students from enrolling in the state’s 28 public colleges and universities. State officials say the policy ensures public education resources are reserved for individuals who are legally present in the United States. However, immigration advocates and education groups have condemned the decision, arguing that it unfairly affects students who have lived and studied in Florida for most of their lives.  

The tougher immigration stance has sparked a nationwide debate. Supporters believe the measures will strengthen border enforcement and uphold immigration laws, while opponents warn they could increase fear within immigrant communities, disrupt businesses, and reduce access to education and employment opportunities.
