US Embassy in Accra to Temporarily Close Consular Section from July 20–31

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the temporary closure of the Consular Section of the United States Embassy in Accra from July 20 to July 31, 2026, to allow for the upgrade of its interview windows.

According to a circular dated July 6, 2026, and signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, the closure will affect the processing of all routine visa applications, including diplomatic and official visas.

The Ministry explained that while routine visa services will be suspended during the two-week period, emergency visa cases may still be considered. It also noted that all visa interviews scheduled within the closure period will be rescheduled by the Embassy.

Normal consular operations are expected to resume on Monday, August 3, 2026.

To minimize disruptions, the Ministry has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to submit any requests for visa facilitation no later than Monday, July 13, 2026. This will enable the Ministry to forward applications to the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday, July 14, for interviews scheduled on Thursday, July 16, 2026, before the temporary shutdown takes effect.

The Ministry further emphasized that it will not be able to facilitate visa applications during the closure period and urged all public institutions to adhere to the stated deadline to avoid inconvenience.

The announcement is expected to affect hundreds of visa applicants, particularly those with planned travel during the period. Individuals with existing appointments are advised to monitor communication from the U.S. Embassy regarding their new interview dates.
