Top 150 Senior High Schools in Ghana Released: PRESEC-Legon Retains Top Spot in Independent 2026 Ranking

An independent ranking of Ghana’s Top 150 Senior High Schools for 2026 has placed Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) at the top of the list, reaffirming its reputation as one of the country’s leading second-cycle institutions.

The ranking, updated in May 2026, assesses schools based on a combination of academic performance and institutional excellence rather than examination results alone.

According to the publication, the top 10 schools are:

  1. PRESEC-Legon (Greater Accra)
  2. Prempeh College (Ashanti)
  3. Mfantsipim School (Central)
  4. Adisadel College (Central)
  5. Opoku Ware School (Ashanti)
  6. Wesley Girls’ High School (Central)
  7. St. Augustine’s College (Central)
  8. Keta Senior High Technical School (Volta)

Other highly ranked schools include Ghana National College, Aburi Girls’ SHS, Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary, Tamale SHS, KNUST SHS, and Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS).

Ranking Criteria

The ranking was compiled using five key indicators:

  • WASSCE Performance – 40%
  • National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Performance – 20%
  • Academic Reputation – 20%
  • Infrastructure and Facilities – 10%
  • Extracurricular Activities and Alumni Impact – 10%

Schools were grouped into categories, with Category A representing top-performing institutions, Category B indicating good-performing schools, and Category C reserved for developing schools.

Independent Ranking

The publishers noted that the list was compiled using publicly available data, academic performance records, NSMQ results, and reputation surveys. They further clarified that the ranking is independent and is not an official publication of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Public Reactions Expected

As with previous school rankings, the latest list is expected to generate discussion among students, parents, alumni associations, and education stakeholders. While many view such rankings as useful guides for assessing school performance, education experts often caution that they should be interpreted alongside other factors such as teaching quality, student support, discipline, and individual learner outcomes.
