Court of Appeal Acquits Former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe Attionu

The Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu, ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The decision overturns her earlier conviction by the High Court, bringing a significant development to one of Ghana’s most closely followed public corruption cases. The appellate court held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient to sustain the conviction, leading to her acquittal and discharge. 

Sedina Tamakloe Attionu had previously been convicted over multiple charges relating to her tenure as MASLOC CEO, including allegations of financial loss to the state and procurement-related offences. Her legal team challenged the conviction, arguing that the prosecution failed to establish the essential elements of the offences and that the charges were fundamentally defective. 

The Court of Appeal agreed with the defence, concluding that the prosecution did not prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt—the legal standard required in criminal proceedings. As a result, the court set aside the conviction and ordered that she be acquitted and discharged. 

The ruling is expected to generate widespread legal and political discussion, given the prominence of the case and its implications for the prosecution of public officials accused of financial crimes.

The Office of the Attorney-General has not yet publicly indicated whether it will seek any further legal action following the Court of Appeal’s decision.
