British-Ghanaian Rapper Sway DaSafo Reportedly Dies at 44

British-Ghanaian rapper Sway DaSafo has reportedly died at the age of 44, prompting messages of mourning from fans and members of the UK music community.

The rapper, born Derek Andrew Safo on September 5, 1982, was widely respected for his lyrical ability, storytelling and contribution to British hip-hop. He was born and raised in North London by Ghanaian parents and spent part of his childhood in Ghana.

Sway rose to prominence in the mid-2000s after independently releasing his mixtapes This Is My Promo Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. In 2005, he became the first unsigned artist to win the Best Hip-Hop Act award at the MOBO Awards.

He later released his acclaimed debut album, This Is My Demo, featuring songs such as “Little Derek.” His other popular records included “Still Speedin’” and “Level Up,” which reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart.

Throughout his career, Sway worked with major international and African artists, including Akon, Ed Sheeran, Lupe Fiasco, Sarkodie and Edem. Beyond performing, he was an executive producer and entrepreneur who supported emerging musicians through Dcypha Productions and New Reign Productions.
