NDC’s Two Years of Macroeconomic Gains Cannot Be Called Stability – Alan Kyerematen

Founder and leader of the United Party, Alan Kyerematen, has cautioned against describing the economic gains recorded under the National Democratic Congress government as sustained macroeconomic stability.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, September 21, 2026, Mr Kyerematen acknowledged that the Mahama administration had made encouraging progress in managing the economy. He maintained, however, that improvements recorded over about two years were insufficient to establish long-term stability. (citinewsroom.com, citinewsroom.com)
According to the former Trade and Industry Minister, successive NDC and NPP governments have often celebrated favourable economic indicators too quickly without first demonstrating that the gains can be sustained.
“You need a longer period of sustained growth,” he said, stressing that genuine economic stability must be measured over an extended period rather than through short-term improvements. (citinewsroom.com)
Mr Kyerematen described the country’s current growth rate of approximately six per cent as positive but argued that Ghana requires between eight and 10 per cent annual growth sustained for about a decade to achieve meaningful economic transformation.
He also rejected the suggestion that economic stabilisation and growth should be pursued separately, describing them as interconnected objectives that must be addressed simultaneously.
While commending President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government for the progress made so far, Mr Kyerematen said the administration’s true test would be its ability to preserve the gains through durable policies, institutional reforms and sustained economic expansion.
His comments add to the ongoing debate over whether Ghana’s improving macroeconomic indicators have translated into lasting economic relief for businesses and households.
