Japan Typhoon: 4 dead 6 missing

At least four people have been killed and six others remain missing after Typhoon Dujuan brought torrential rain, flooding and landslides to Japan’s Pacific coast.

The neighbouring prefectures of Kanagawa and Chiba were among the hardest-hit areas. In Yokosuka, a woman in her 60s died after mud entered her home, while three other victims, aged between their 50s and 80s, were also confirmed dead in storm-related incidents. (reuters.com⁠)

Emergency personnel continued clearing debris and searching damaged properties, including a house buried by a landslide in Miura, south of Tokyo.

The storm caused rivers to overflow, flooded homes and roads, and disrupted electricity supplies to approximately 45,000 households. Residents in some affected areas were advised to remain alert because saturated soil could trigger further landslides even after the heaviest rain had subsided. (reuters.com⁠, welt.de⁠)

Ahead of the typhoon’s approach, parts of the Izu Islands and Japan’s Pacific coast recorded more than 300 millimetres of rainfall, prompting authorities to issue severe flood and landslide warnings. Typhoon Dujuan has since moved northeastwards away from Japan, but search-and-rescue operations are continuing. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise as emergency teams reach communities affected by landslides and flooding.
