Another Drug Bust: Passenger From Ghana Arrested With R2m Suspected Heroin in South Africa

A 52-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after authorities allegedly discovered suspected heroin valued at more than R2 million—approximately GH¢1.4 million—in his luggage.

The suspect had reportedly arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, on Sunday, September 20, 2026, when officers from the South African Police Service, working with the Border Management Authority, intercepted him during an intelligence-led operation.

A search of his luggage allegedly uncovered bullet-shaped packages and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin. The materials have been seized for further examination. (sanews.gov.za⁠, myjoyonline.com⁠)

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said the arrest brings to three the number of suspected drug couriers apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport within the past three weeks.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court to face drug-trafficking-related charges as investigations continue into the network behind the consignment.

Although the flight originated from Accra, authorities have not yet publicly established whether the suspected drugs originated in Ghana or whether the country was used only as a transit point.

The latest interception has nevertheless renewed concerns about international narcotics trafficking through the Accra–Johannesburg air route and highlighted the need for stronger intelligence cooperation between Ghanaian and South African authorities.
