NDC Introduces Airport Infrastructure Levy to Fund Regional Aviation Projects

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the implementation of a new Airport Infrastructure Levy aimed at financing the construction and enhancement of airport facilities across Ghana, including a new airport in Wa, Upper West Region.

Speaking at the launch of the Upper West Shea Park Resource Hub on January 31, 2026, President Mahama stated, “Recently, we passed the Airport Infrastructure Levy. This levy imposes a fee on international air tickets, tickets within Africa, ECOWAS region, and domestic flights. The funds collected will be used to develop airports across the country.”

The levy introduces additional charges on various flight tickets:

  • International flights: US$50 per ticket
  • Domestic flights: GH¢100 per ticket

These funds will be allocated to a dedicated account to support airport development nationwide.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of modern airports in supporting regional development and improving connectivity. He noted that Wa has been selected as a beneficiary of the fund, with plans to build an entirely new airport rather than upgrade the existing facility.

The President explained that the current airport site is unsuitable, noting that a major road was diverted to accommodate the runway. He revealed that land for a new airport had been allocated several years ago and that officials from the Ghana Airports Company inspected the site two weeks prior to the launch.

The Airport Infrastructure Levy is part of the government’s broader vision to modernize Ghana’s transportation infrastructure while driving economic growth and regional integration.

In addition to the airport levy, President Mahama outlined other key regional development projects, including road construction, market modernization, and agro-industrial initiatives such as the Upper West Shea Park Resource Hub.

The levy has received support from Parliament and is expected to ensure sustainable financing for infrastructure projects, promoting trade, investment, and regional growth across Ghana.
