GRA grants two-month amnesty for uncustomed vehicles

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced a two-month amnesty for owners and users of uncustomed vehicles to regularise their documentation without incurring penalties.

In a public notice issued by the Customs Division, the amnesty will run from June 1 to July 31, 2026, and is aimed at encouraging voluntary compliance among individuals whose vehicles were illegally imported into the country.

According to the Authority, the exercise will waive all penalties that would ordinarily apply if such vehicles were impounded by customs officials.

The GRA is urging affected vehicle owners to take advantage of the period to complete the necessary customs procedures and avoid future sanctions.

The Authority further indicated that after July 31, 2026, Customs officers will begin nationwide unannounced inspections on roads across the country to identify and impound all uncustomed vehicles found in circulation.

“The general public should note that after 31st July, 2026, the Customs Division will undertake a nationwide unannounced inspection of vehicles on the roads and impound all uncustomed vehicles,” the statement warned.

The move forms part of efforts by the revenue authority to strengthen compliance within the transport and importation sector while boosting domestic tax and customs revenue mobilisation.

Analysts say the amnesty presents an opportunity for vehicle owners to regularise their documentation at a lower cost while helping the state curb revenue leakages linked to illicit vehicle imports.
