FDA Shuts Down Italian Boy Lounge at Nungua Over Alleged Illicit Drugs, Two Arrested

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has raided and shut down Italian Boy Lounge, a popular nightspot at Nungua Kantamanto in Accra, over the alleged possession of illicit drugs, as part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on substance abuse in entertainment venues.

What Happened

The operation took place on the evening of Friday, July 3, 2026, while the lounge was reportedly being prepared to open for business. FDA enforcement officers moved in and identified and seized a number of substances suspected to be illicit drugs during the swoop. Two staff members of the establishment were arrested and taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations, while the premises have since been closed pending the outcome of that investigation.

The FDA has not yet issued a full official statement detailing the exact nature and quantity of the substances retrieved, or the full circumstances surrounding the operation.

Part of a Wider Crackdown

The Italian Boy Lounge raid was not an isolated action. According to reports, FDA officers carried out coordinated inspections across several entertainment hotspots in Accra that same evening, with a parallel raid also shutting down the nearby Liquid Zero Pub, where additional individuals were reportedly arrested on similar suspicions of drug possession and distribution.

Authorities say the coordinated exercise forms part of an intensified nationwide campaign to disrupt the circulation and use of unauthorised substances in nightlife and entertainment spaces, and to strengthen compliance within the hospitality sector more broadly.

FDA’s Warning to Nightlife Operators

The FDA has reiterated that allowing licensed premises to be used for illegal drug transactions constitutes a serious breach of public safety regulations. Officials say establishments found in violation risk immediate closure, prosecution, and possible revocation of their operating licences.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that bars, lounges, and nightclubs are not turned into channels for narcotics distribution or substance abuse, and has urged members of the public to support enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activity at entertainment venues.
